For this Club Car Precedent Navitas AC Conversion, we performed a ‘Complete DC to AC’ conversion on a 2009 Club Car Precedent. This involved replacing the stock DC motor with a high-efficiency Navitas 3kW AC motor. We then paired the new motor with a Navitas 440A TAC 2.0 AC controller for increased efficiency, performance, and user control. If performing this DIY, we always recommend you do ample research, employ proper safety measures, and/or consult an installation professional.
For our Club Car Precedent Navitas AC Conversion, removing the old motor ‘should’ be a smooth process. There are three bolts used to secure it that need to be removed. Some motors may be stuck harder than others, and require significant force to break it loose. Once the bolts are removed, ensure you have adequate space underneath the cart to brace the motor weight as it’s slid off. Once the motor was removed, the assembly was cleaned and greased.
The new AC motor slides on the same way the old one came off, and will line up with the original mounting holes, and utilize the same mounting hardware.
This specific 3kW motor comes with a built-in EMB (Electronic Motor Brake). Refer to your cart’s specific electrical setup. In this particular installation, because Club Car’s do not have a factory EMB system, we went another route to use this function. The positive to the EMB was wired to the keyswitch, and the negative grounded to the B-. This allows the EMB to release upon the keyswitch activating, and vice versa when deactivating.
On this Club Car Precedent Navitas AC Conversion, When you start to remove the original controller, it’s incredibly important to label existing wiring as you go. This helps maintain clarity. Extend wires if needed, and trim wires down if needed. The controller bay on the Club Car Precedent is very tight once all the wiring is complete.
After we’ve mocked everything out on the Club Car Precedent Navitas AC Conversion, we clean up wire runs, trim all of our lines to proper length, and replace wire where necessary using the correct gauge wire.
The new controller was mounted securely and wired into the system with attention to detail. For all Navitas installations, it is our standard practice to use ‘Cut-to-length’ 2AWG power and motor-phase cables. The result is a smoother, more responsive ride with increased performance, efficiency, and safety.
The rear black plastic controller cover may need to be trimmed or pushed out to allow for all of the wires and hardware to fit without pressing excessively on smaller connectors. Once the motor and controller were wired up, power was turned on to the cart.
For this Club Car Precedent Navitas AC Conversion, and any motor installation, we always recommend working with an experienced technician. This will ensure an excellent installation and product warranty from Navitas is guaranteed.
