Step 1: Safety & Disassembly

Engage Safety Disconnects

Prerequisite for Ryobi ZT480 battery upgrade: Ensure mower is parked on level ground.
Turn off the main key ignition switch and remove the key.
Locate the safety disconnect plug (usually positioned behind or beneath the driver seat assembly) and pull it completely out. This breaks the main circuit and prevents accidental electrical shorts while working.

Remove Frame & Shroud Panels

Unbolt the seat bracket hardware and lift off the main seat assembly to access the battery bay.

Carefully remove the plastic side shrouds and rear cover guard. Keep all bolts, clips, and mounting brackets categorized in small parts trays to streamline reassembly later.

The factory lead-acid batteries are bulk, heavy, and barely fit in the compartment space.

Once the outside trim parts are removed you can see the bulky lead acid batteries, which we will be moving as part of the upgrade process.

Step 2: Disconnect & Removal

Disconnect Terminal Cables

Disconnect the main negative cable first, followed by the rest of the series power cabling.

Proceed to unbolt the remaining fastening nuts securing the heavy 12V lead acid batteries.

Extract Lead Acid/AGM Pack

Remove the metal battery hold down bars.

Carefully lift out each of the heavy AGM batteries, which you will no longer need after the Ryobi ZT480 battery upgrade (please consider recycling your old AGM batteries).

Strip Obsolete Wiring

Remove old, unnecessary series jumpers, charge lead extensions, or outdated harness adapters that are no longer required by for the Ryobi ZT480 battery upgrade. (You will maintain the charger interlock module – blue barrel connector to a small black box).

Step 3: Clean & Prep

Clean Battery Tray

Vacuum or blow out accumulated grass clippings, dirt, leaves, and road grime from the bottom of the battery tray floor. Make sure everything is celan before we install the Ryobi ZT480 battery upgrade.

Inspect & Treat Rust

Inspect the metal tray floor for signs of moisture build up or acid corrosion.

Use a wire brush to scrub away loose rust particles, clean with degreaser, and apply a coat of rust inhibiting spray paint or bed liner to protect the bare metal frame.

Verify Tray Clearance

Inspect the inner frame dimensions to ensure your new Qomo Energy sits completely flat against the floor tray without resting on weld beads or bolts.

The Qomolander 48V 65Ah battery kit perfectly replaces the factory lead acid batteries, but does require disassembly of the mowers seat to properly reach.

Step 4: Measure & Secure

Test Fitment

Lower the single lithium battery unit into the center position of the battery compartment. For this Ryobi ZT480 battery upgrade install, we’re using a Qomo Energy lithium kit.

Lock Down the Module

You will likely need to use some DIY fabricated method (we use a 1-inch aluminum bar as our mounting bracket). Drill and bolt the Qomo Energy battery to the tray. Some other users will use wooden boards to brace the unit for support.

Step 5: Accessories & Electrical Hookup

Main Power Cable Connection

Connect the mower main positive (+) and negative (-) cables to the battery pack.

Install State of Charge (SOC) Meter

Mount the included digital lithium SOC state of charge display onto your mower display cluster area. It will fit in the original location.

Drill a hole in the cluster for the ON/OFF button. Secure the button once completed.

Run the display and ON/OFF button communication harness back to the battery module so you can monitor real time battery voltage, current draw, and exact remaining charge percentage while mowing.

Setup Lithium Charger Port

Connect the dedicated high speed lithium charger port harness to the battery. Secure the charge port housing onto the body panel or frame so you can easily plug in the lithium charger without disassembling panels.

Install New Lithium Charger

Find a location in the battery tray to screw/bolt your new lithium charger. Ensure there is clearance underneath for the hardware. Your Ryobi ZT480 battery upgrade has it’s own charger and port separate from the OEM one.

Your new SOC (state of charge) meter will be visible from your control panel.

Step 6: Reassembly & Field Testing

Reinstall Body Panels

Route all wiring cleanly, securing loose cables with zip ties away from moving steering linkages or sharp metal edges.

Hook up all remaining connections.

Reattach plastic side shrouds, rear body trim, and the main driver seat assembly.

Initial System Power On

Reinsert the main safety key plug and sit on the mower. The seat switch will need pressure for operation to be tested.

Press the ON button for the Qomo Energy battery.

Turn on the key ignition switch.

Verify that the dashboard display, headlights, and new battery percentage screen illuminate properly.

Operational Field Test

Drive the mower to an open test area at low speed. Test forward, reverse, and turn responsiveness.

Engage the mower blades under load to confirm that the 200A continuous output rating of the BMS handles sudden blade acceleration seamlessly without tripping safety cutoffs.

The Qomolander battery kit we used for the installation fits comfortably in the existing battery compartment.

Much of the exterior shell of the mower will have been removed during the installation, and can be re-attached once your new battery is up and running.
